Prison Parolees
A current matter has caused me deep concern. Our very capable, noble and intelligent governor has decided to send many offenders back into the community—an early-out for many.
My concern is that the sex offenders are being released through the Limestone Correctional Facility instead of being returned to the offender's home town. That means an influx of sex offenders who are not native to this area will live in one of the most populated areas of Alabama.
Let's look at some of those defined as sex-offenders.
If a male 16 years old or older has consensual sex with a young woman under 16, he may be judged a sex offender.
Homosexuals-who are often married with families-often hide their sexual preference and are sometimes snagged in a compromising situation, and are judged to be sex offenders.
These two illustrations are unfortunate, but persons caught in those situations are not a threat to society nor the community. It is my personal opinion that they should not be tagged as sex offenders.
My concern is that those who have raped-perhaps even harmed or murdered-unwilling, unsuspecting victims might continue to be predators in our community.
Also, pedophiles—those who use children for sexual purposes whether it be touching, photographing, or sex.
Pedophiles cannot be cured-or controlled-and are forever a threat to the community. They are not desirable prospects as inhabitants of any community.
I agree with the governor in wanting to speed some prisoners back to the community, but shouldn't they be sent back where they came from, where they are known, and where they have family?
Please write the governor a letter and make your wishes known. You would be surprised at the good that can be accomplished through thoughtful, non- threatening letters.
